The name is Arbutus Bar and we are in Olhao, next to Faro. I had been visiting Olhao for eight years and it has a type of “end-of the-world” vibe like Provincetown or Key West (it attracts artists, bikers, and rock’n rollers!)
The drinks are supposed to be like the pleasure of discovering cocktails on early eGullet. If you’ve spent time in Boston 10+ years ago, it is supposed to be like Green Street Grill meets No. 9 Park’s bar; classics and a lot of 3 ingredient confidence.
A $30 750-ml bottle of aged rum would be 4 cents/ml, and probably of fairly mediocre quality at that price. For $24 or so you can get a 750 of good vodka or just maybe gin, but that’s still 3.2 cents a milliliter, or close to double what the Evan cost.
Man, I miss being able to ride the B61 down to LeNell’s circa 2006 and take home an inexpensive bottle from a well-curated selection that today I’d never be able to find/afford.
As David says, at least there’s still plenty of good, affordable stuff out there.
