Bats and spirits

It’s easiest to approach spirits and cocktails in a decontextualized manner, because that dodges a lot of difficult, ‘controversial’ things that might create conflict, or worse, be bad for business. One of those habitually-dodged issues is diversity/inclusion. Bio-diversity is also relevant.

Bats have always been entangled in some spirits. To their credit, Bacardi still maintains the bat near the center of their brand identity, even if the symbol looks a bit vacuous to me, these days. Bats are integral to the celebrated, fermentable agaves of Mexico. I believe some mezcal brands even draw attention to this.
