Eddie Clarke and The Albany Club, London

I’ve been working a bit on Eddie Clarke’s mid-Century published works and have been trying to get a handle on the “Albany Club” at which he worked in the early 1950s.

This club seems to have been located at 3 Savile Row, which you may recognize as the address of the Beatles’ Apple Records!

The Albany Club seems to have been a sporty place. There’s a bunch of police blotter stuff in 1953 about a high profile raid for gambling. I’m not going deep on that, but here’s one from the Evening Standard, October 21, 1953:

The club seems to have finally gone kaput a couple years later (Daily Telegraph, November 3, 1955):

This is super interesting, Martin!

The UKBG Guide to Drinks from 1953 has a bar setup photo they credit to Albany Club as well:

My favorite detail about the Albany Club is that they had their own henhouse in order to ensure the freshness of the eggs which were used in many of their drinks. Their prize egg-laying chicken, Albany Amber, got her own spread.
