Lucana Amaro

I know Amaro recipes are well kept secrets, but can anyone think of an Amaro close to Lucana? There is a cocktail I am really anxious to try from a book called Nightcaps and Leandro from Barfly uses Lucano. I just hate buying a bottle of something, using only an ounce or two and having the bottle sit there for years. I have good intentions, but it never works out that way. I know its risky to say you can substitute out any dark amaro for any other, but if I already have Averna, Aperol, Campari, Cynar & Fernet, which other ones do I REALLY need to round out the collection? I’ve been to Amor Y Amargo in NYC, so I know there are literally hundreds, but which would be the “staples” of any decent home bar?

Averna is probably a reasonable scratch substitute—if you like the drink with Averna, then you can consider grabbing a bottle of Lucano for the full effect.

Of the ones that you mentioned, Martin is spot on with Averna but it’s more orange tinged like Amer Picon. I’d say Amaro CioCiaro is probably the closest match that’s available around here.

Thanks guys, I will try the Averna (I might not even like the cocktail, it has heavy cream in it), so let me start with what I have on hand rather than spend another $30 on a bottle that will sit for years. If I love the cocktail and goes on my regular home menu, then I will consider another amaro. Appreciate the feedback!
