The first recipe is a variation of the one from the Savoy Cocktail Book. The second is a variation on the one from Drinks Long & Short. I’m curious about the first one and will give it a try. And “Old Etonman” is a hoot, probably his translation of L’Ancien D’Eton.

Oh, gin and Lillet…that sounds like the Vesper Martini…popularized by Ian Fleming and attributed to Ivar Bryce…WHO BOTH WENT TO ETON. The Vesper is a vodka martiniized Old Etonian.

I hardly understand why I read Ivar Bryce’s memoirs of Ian Fleming, but both were at Eton during—and absconded to visit—the Wembley Exhibition of 1925. Both dined at Boulestin’s some time after that, and before 1930, when Bryce left for São Paulo and was married.
Regarding the origination of the Vesper (Martini) circa 1952, Bryce does not mention the vodka which appears in the published version.
