Hi! I just found a mistake on the grain-based spirits entry (page 328): “Scotland’s single malt whisky is distilled in pot stills entirely from unmalted barley”

Hello, this is my first time posting here!
Congratulations to everyone that contributed to this amazing book.

My two cents:

  1. “Scotland and Ireland”: page 633, there’s a reference to an article about “Grain”. Maybe it should be “Grain-based spirits”, or “Whisky, Grain”?

  2. “Whisky, Bourbon”: page 768, it reads “Bourbon cannot be more than 62.5% ABV when it comes off the still…”. I’m guessing this is about the spirit’s maximum allowed ABV before stored for maturation?
    I’m studying for my WSET level 2 exam and in their handbook is stated that “the spirit must be distilled to no more than 80% ABV”

Not at all! Thanks for catching those; I’ve added them to the second-edition corrections list. I don’t know when that will be, but I hope by then we’ll have caught all the glitches.

Hello, it’s me again. Probably already on your minds, still:
“Courvoisier”: page 201, now owned by Gruppo Campari. :slight_smile:

Eau-de-vie, page 242 bottom left paragraph lists the berries of the whitebeam tree as bilberries, but the book cited lists an English translation as the “Beam-berry.” With a little googling, the term beamberry doesn’t appear to be used much of anywhere online in relation to the fruit of the whitebeam tree, and the term bilberry seems to refer to the fruit of Vaccinium myrtillus instead. Not sure what the best term would be (simply Whitebeam berries?) but hope this helps those in the future also trying to learn more about “one of the finest” eaux-de-vie :laughing:

Thanks, lekkow; yes, if and when it comes to a second edition we will update all the various corporate reshufflings. Hard to keep track, sometimes.

Actually, bilberries and the berries of the whitebeam tree are meant as separate items in a series; I should have probably separated them with a semi-colon, not a comma. I will amend, given the chance. Thanks!

Till it comes to the 2nd edition (pretty sure it will) we’ll be on the lookout for these minor “mistakes” ! This book is an amazing read, you guys have done an awesome job! :sunglasses::wink:
