Some thoughts on the history of mixology in the Río de la Plata region

Hi everyone,

Here’s a copy of a small article I wrote for an Uruguayan magazine on the history of mixology in the Río de la Plata (River Plate) region.

It mentions my finding of the earliest known cocktail book from Uruguay/Argentina, C. Lefebre’s Manual de Cocktails y bebidas mezcladas from 1903.

Nice article! I’d like to see more on that topic.

In case it’s helpful: “Rio de la Plata” is usually left untranslated in English contexts, I think.

This is a weird one, because it should be River of Silver in English, but is historically called River Plate or La Plata River. Stylistically, for here, I’d prefer to keep it Río de la Plata, and I have adjusted the title of the thread accordingly.

I’ve been looking into the Argentine spirit Aperital.

Apparently Aperital was similar to a pelinkovac, and that or “Pineral” is recommended as a contemporary substitute. Bottles reference Alphonse Delor, an old Bordeaux house, though one of the speakers in the video theorizes that the link was false advertising.
