I wrote an article for Punch about the rough road the Mai Tai traveled between its invention in the 1940s and its recent restoration to dignity. Dug up some interesting and insane stuff in my research. You could call anything a Mai Tai for a long while. It was a free-for-all.

Yeah. The authorship of the drink wasn’t the point of the article, so no need. The articles reporting on the state of the drink in Hawaii in the 1980s and 1990s were pretty hilarious.
It’s also hard to envision the authorship question around the Mai Tai ever becoming any more interesting.
